PGE and Ørsted have signed next contract for the production and delivery of secondary steel structures for the foundations (so-called secondary steel) of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. The production of the elements will take place in Gdansk.
The service boat mooring platforms and anode cages will be manufactured by a Polish company, Baltic Industrial Group, at factory in Gdansk. The anode cages and structures allowing the mooring of boats are installed to protect the foundation from corrosion and mechanical damage. The contract signed with the Baltic Industrial Group is the next and final part of the secondary steel area for the Baltica 2 project.
– The signing of this agreement is another step forward for Poland’s rapidly growing offshore wind energy supply chain. Key components needed for the construction and subsequent safe operation of offshore wind farms will be manufactured in Poland. One of PGE’s main goals is to maximise the participation of domestic companies in both current and future offshore projects in Poland. The use of Polish facilities and the knowledge of our specialists is another important contribution to the development of the domestic industry in the huge and strategic undertaking, which is the construction of offshore wind farms in the Baltic,’ said Bartosz Fedurek, CEO of PGE Baltica.
– Today’s signing of a contract with a Polish company for such an important area as secondary steel is a clear signal that the domestic supply chain can compete in the offshore wind industry. This competitiveness is also important for investors as it fosters innovation, which is a key element in the development of offshore wind technology worldwide,’ – Ulrik Lange, vice president and managing director of the Baltica 2 project, Ørsted, said.
– GP Baltic’s participation in the Baltica 2 project not only confirms our competence in the production of advanced steel structures for the offshore sector, but also provides definite support for the development of the Polish supply chain. We are developing the production of steel structures for foundations, so-called secondary steel, which play a key role in ensuring the durability and safety of offshore wind farms. We are pleased that the components produced in Gdansk will work for Poland’s energy transition,‘ said Adam Kowalski, CEO of the Baltic Industrial Group.
The Baltica 2 project entered the offshore construction phase this year. Work will soon begin to prepare the seabed for the laying of foundations and submarine cables. Construction of the onshore connection infrastructure in the municipality of Choczewo has already been underway since mid-2024. The investors – PGE and Ørsted – have already made the final investment decision for the project. They have contracted the key components necessary to start the construction of Baltica 2 offshore and have signed all the installation contracts – foundations, cables, turbines and offshore transformer stations. The partners have all the necessary construction permits. With 107 turbines with a total capacity of 1.5 GW, the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm will significantly contribute to the transformation of the Polish energy sector.
